Why mass unfollow at all?
Two reasons come up again and again. The first is signal: the more dormant, irrelevant or promotional accounts you follow, the less you see from the people you actually care about. The second is ratio: X applies tighter follow limits to accounts whose following count vastly exceeds their followers, and a profile following 4,900 people with 300 followers reads as spam to humans and algorithms alike. Unfollowing non-followers fixes both at once.
The rules that matter before you start
X’s rules do not forbid unfollowing, even in large quantities. What they forbid is aggressive following and unfollowing: churning through accounts quickly, following in bulk to attract follow-backs and then dumping everyone who didn’t reciprocate, or using automation to do any of this. The practical implications:
- Pace matters more than volume. Three hundred unfollows spread across an afternoon look like a person; three hundred in four minutes look like a script.
- Never pair unfollowing with automated following. That combination is the definition of churn.
- New and dormant accounts have less headroom. If your account is weeks old or has been inactive for months, go slower.

Method 1: mass unfollow manually on X
There is no multi-select in the X app, so “manual mass unfollow” means repetition:
- Open your profile and tap Following.
- Scroll the list. Each row shows a Following button; accounts that follow you back carry a small Follows you label.
- For each account without the label that you want to drop, tap Following and confirm Unfollow.
- Repeat.
At two or three taps per account plus scrolling, 1,000 non-followers is an evening of work, and the list reorders as you go, so it is easy to lose your place. It is fine for a few dozen accounts. Beyond that, use an app.
Avoid browser console scripts. Pasting JavaScript into x.com to click every Following button in a loop is exactly the kind of automation X detects, and it usually runs with no delays at all. Accounts get temporarily locked this way every week.
Method 2: mass unfollow with Unfollow Today
Unfollow Today is a free Android app built for this job. It loads your following and followers lists, computes who doesn’t follow you back, and gives you multi-select with automatic pacing.
- Install. Download the APK and install it. About a minute.
- Sign in with your X account.
- Whitelist first. Open Whitelist and protect friends, family, clients and favourite accounts. They will be excluded from every list and bulk action.
- Filter. In Not following back, switch on Inactive and No avatar. These are the accounts nobody misses.
- Select. Tick accounts individually or tap Select all on the filtered list.
- Unfollow selected. The app works through the queue with randomised delays, pauses if X signals a rate limit and stops at the safe-mode daily cap.
- MK Mika Travels@travel.mika · 2.1K followers Unfollow
- DS Design Daily@design_daily · 48K followers Unfollow
- AR Arda R.@ardar · Inactive 14 months Unfollow
- NQ Nova Quotes@novaquotes · 120K followers Unfollow
- LP Lena P.@lenap_ · 310 followers Unfollow
- GX Growth Hacks X@growthhacksx · 9.8K followers Unfollow

The whole process for 1,000 accounts is a few minutes of your attention spread over two or three days of the app doing the paced work in the background. The full how-to guide covers every screen.
A safe clean-up strategy for large accounts
If you follow several thousand accounts, do it in passes rather than all at once:
| Pass | Filter | Why first |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Inactive 12+ months | Zero downside; these accounts will never notice. |
| 2 | No avatar / no bio | Mostly abandoned or throwaway accounts. |
| 3 | Followed then left | Accounts that used you for a follow-back. |
| 4 | Sort by followers, descending | Large accounts that will never follow back. Keep the ones you read. |
| 5 | Everything else, reviewed by hand | Real people. Take your time. |
Leave safe mode on. If the daily cap stops you, that is the point: come back tomorrow. Check the Stats tab to watch your follow ratio improve after each pass.
Mistakes that get accounts limited
- Unfollowing thousands in one sitting with pacing disabled, especially on a young account.
- Following hundreds of accounts right before or after a mass unfollow. That is churn, and it is what the rules target.
- Using web tools that run unpaced automation on your behalf.
- Ignoring rate-limit warnings and retrying immediately. Unfollow Today handles this automatically; if you do it manually, wait at least 15 minutes.
Handled sensibly, a mass unfollow is routine maintenance. Handled carelessly, it is the most common way ordinary users end up with a temporarily locked account. Use pacing, protect your whitelist and spread the work out.
