Are Twitter Unfollow Apps Safe? What to Check Before You Install One

The real risks

1. Account limits or locks. The app unfollows too fast or automates follows, and X restricts your account.
2. Modified APKs. Copies from mirror sites can contain adware or worse.
3. Privacy leakage. The app uploads your lists to a server and monetises them.

Check 1: what permissions does it want?

An unfollow app needs Internet access and little else. Be suspicious of requests for contacts or SMS, accessibility services (lets the app read and tap anything on your screen) or device admin. Android shows permissions at install time and in Settings → Apps.

Check 2: does it automate engagement?

Auto-follow, auto-like, auto-repost and auto-DM features are what X’s platform manipulation rules punish. A tool that only unfollows accounts you selected is doing something you could do by hand. A tool that follows people for you is doing something X prohibits.

Check 3: how does it pace bulk actions?

Look for rate limits, safe mode, delays or daily caps in the app’s description or settings. If it promises “unfollow 5,000 accounts in one tap”, expect rate-limit errors and possibly a lock. See our unfollow limits explainer.

Check 4: where does your data go?

Read the privacy policy: are your lists processed on your device or uploaded to the developer’s servers, and are they shared with third parties? If there is no privacy policy at all, that is your answer.

Check 5: is it maintained and genuine?

• Last update. X changes constantly; an app not updated in a year is broken or about to be.
• Official source. Download APKs from the developer’s own site, not from mirror sites.
• Play Protect. Its generic warning for sideloaded apps is normal, but if it specifically identifies the app as harmful, stop.
