The manual way: the “Follows you” label
On X, open your profile and tap Following. Each row shows the account name, handle and a Following button. Accounts that follow you back also show a small grey Follows you label under the name. Anyone without the label is a non-follower.
That is the entire built-in toolset. There is no filter for “not following back”, no count, no sort order you can change and no multi-select. For a following list of 50 it is manageable. For 500 it is tedious. For 5,000 it is not realistic, which is why Twitter non-follower tools have existed almost as long as Twitter.
The fast way: Unfollow Today
Unfollow Today is a free Android app that does the comparison for you. After you sign in with your X account, it downloads your following and followers lists and computes the difference in seconds.
- MK Mika Travels@travel.mika · 2.1K followers Unfollow
- DS Design Daily@design_daily · 48K followers Unfollow
- AR Arda R.@ardar · Inactive 14 months Unfollow
- NQ Nova Quotes@novaquotes · 120K followers Unfollow
- LP Lena P.@lenap_ · 310 followers Unfollow
- GX Growth Hacks X@growthhacksx · 9.8K followers Unfollow
- TM Tom M.@tom.m · No bio, no avatar Unfollow
- Download the Unfollow Today APK and install it.
- Sign in with your X account.
- Wait for the counters at the top to settle. For accounts following more than 5,000 people the first sync can take a minute or two.
- Open Not following back. That is your complete list of non-followers.
The list is cached, so reopening the app is instant, and each new sync refreshes it and also populates the Unfollowers tab. Full instructions are in the how-to guide.
Sorting and filtering your non-followers
A raw list of a thousand accounts is not much more useful than the X app. What makes the difference is being able to slice it:
- Sort by followers to separate celebrities and brands (who will never follow back and whom you may still want to read) from ordinary accounts.
- Sort by activity to find accounts that have not posted in months or years.
- Sort by follow date to review your oldest follows, which are usually the least relevant.
- Filter: Inactive (6 or 12 months), No avatar, No bio, Few followers, Followed then left.
- Search by name or handle when you are looking for someone specific.
Deciding who to keep
Not following back is not a reason to unfollow by itself. Journalists, artists, official accounts and big creators rarely follow back and are often the most valuable accounts on your timeline. Before any bulk action:
- Whitelist everyone you follow for their content regardless of reciprocity. Unfollow Today hides whitelisted accounts from the non-followers list and skips them in bulk actions.
- Work through the Inactive and No avatar filters first. These decisions are easy.
- Review the rest by hand in batches. If you cannot remember why you followed someone, that is your answer.
When you are ready to act, read how to mass unfollow on X safely. The short version: keep safe mode on and spread big clean-ups over several days.
The follow ratio, explained
Your follow ratio is followers divided by following. A ratio above 1 means more people follow you than you follow. X uses following counts and ratios in its follow limits: every account can follow up to 400 accounts per day, but accounts following 5,000 people or more can only continue if their ratio meets X’s threshold. Beyond the rules, people judge profiles by the numbers at a glance, and a lopsided ratio reads as spammy. Unfollow Today’s Stats tab shows your ratio and how it moves after each clean-up.
A healthy timeline is the goal, not a perfect ratio. Follow who you like; just make sure the list is made of deliberate choices rather than accumulated accidents.
