What changed after the X rebrand
In 2023 X ended free API access, and most of the Twitter unfollow services built on it shut down within weeks. At the same time X tightened enforcement against follow/unfollow churn, so tools that ran aggressive automation started getting their users limited. If you find a “best Twitter unfollow app” list from 2021, assume most entries are dead.
What to look for
- Completeness. Does it show your whole following list, or only the first few hundred behind a paywall?
- Unfollower tracking. Can it tell you who unfollowed you, not just who isn’t following?
- Whitelist. Can you protect accounts from bulk actions?
- Pacing. Does bulk unfollow respect X limits, or fire everything at once?
- No engagement automation. Auto-follow and auto-like features are red flags.
- Maintenance. Updated in the last few months.
The three types of unfollow tool
Web dashboards work on any device but usually run on subscriptions and perform bulk actions from their own servers, which makes pacing opaque. Browser extensions and scripts are free but act at machine speed with no rate-limit handling, which is exactly what X detects. Native mobile apps run on your phone with your own account and give precise control over pacing; the trade-off is platform lock-in.

Verdict
On Android, Unfollow Today is the tool we recommend for finding non-followers, tracking unfollowers and cleaning up in bulk. On iPhone or desktop, choose a web dashboard with a recent update date and no auto-follow. Avoid console scripts for anything beyond a few accounts.
